Bus tour of the city (clients’ coach): from the old harbour, past Borgo Teresiano, along the seashore (Rive) and the main square (Piazza Unità d’Italia), all the way to the modern harbour and Risiera di S. Sabba (national war monument). Hill of San Giusto, for a visit of the cathedral and a look at Roman remains of the ancient city of Tergeste, also with a panoramic view on the gulf of Trieste! Walk through the historical part of the city (Piazza Verdi and Piazza della Borsa) and Jewish ghetto. Otherwise, possible visit of an Orthodox Church and/or one the historical coffee shops with a special Central European atmosphere.
CASTLE OF DUINO* and TRIESTE (full-day)
Visit of the beautiful gardens and extraordinary Castle of Duino, magnificent mansion of Princes Thurn und Taxis built on a cliff above the sea; transfer (20 km approx.) to Trieste and further visit (as above).
CASTLE OF MIRAMARE * and TRIESTE (full-day)
The Castle of Miramare, now a State Historical Museum, was once the residence of Maximilian von Habsburg, Emperor of Mexico; transfer (8 km approx.) to Trieste and further visit (as above).
Excursion on the Karst mountain, up to the Church of Monte Grisa, with a panoramic view on the whole gulf of Trieste; possible stop for a look at the castle of Duino from the cliff (Rilke path), and drive to the Timavo estuary to observe a peculiar phenomenon due to this “mysterious” river springing out of the mountain after flowing underground for 30 Km through the Karst.
At the end of this itinerary, possible visit to Grotta Gigante*, for a guided tour with in-house guides.
FOIBA of BASOVIZZA, ROSANDRA VALLEY and MUGGIA (half-day)
Visit of Foiba war monument at Basovizza (12 km from Trieste) and its documentation centre (depending on opening hours); belvedere of San Lorenzo with a view on the Rosandra Valley Canyon, a lovely place for mountain tracking. Remains of a Roman aqueduct. Visit of Muggia, a picturesque Venetian-like port, right at the border between Italy and Slovenia.
GORIZIA and COLLIO (half-day)
Bus tour of Gorizia (clients’ coach), along the border with Slovenia up to the Transalpina train station built when the territory used to belong to Austria. Visit of the area surrounding the medieval castle* and Provincial museums* (WWI museum and other museums). Possible excursion in the hills surrounding Gorizia (collio), famous for wines, and possible wine tasting session (to be booked and paid for).
WW I BATTLE FIELDS (half-day + 1 extra hour if necessary)
Visit of Redipuglia War Memorial, where 100.000 soldiers are buried, and its war museum. Excursion to mount San Michele, and walk through fortifications and trenches. Possible visit of Military War Memorial at Oslavia near Gorizia or at the War Museum* in Gorizia, or Ara Pacis Mundi at Medea.
UDINE (half-day + possible extra hour)
Walking tour of the city: castle on the hill, Piazza Libertà, main street (Via Mercato Vecchio), and squares (Piazza Matteotti, etc.). This includes an itinerary on Giambattista Tiepolo’s footsteps: frescoes inside the cathedral, Oratory of Purity (with works by his son Giandomenico, too). Considering some visits are not possible on Sunday morning due to services, as an alternative, it is possible to go to the Archbishops’ Palace* (magnificent frescoes painted by the artist when he came to Udine for the first time).
CIVIDALE del FRIULI (half-day or full-day)
UNESCO site since 2011, at the head of the “Italia Langobardorum” project, Cividale takes tourists back to the VIIIth century, at the time of the Lombards (Small Lombard Church called Tempietto Longobardo* and Christian Museum* of the cathedral), but also to former times with a visit at the National Archaeological Museum*. The visit includes a walking tour of the small town down to the Devil’s Bridge. In the case of a full-day visit, possible visit of the celtic underground grotto and/or Castelmonte Sanctuary or Abbazia di Rosazzo.
AQUILEIA (half-day or full-day)
UNESCO site since 1999, this ancient Roman city reflects past glory in remains of the Forum, River Port and residential areas built about 2.000 years ago; extraordinary objects can be found at the National Archaelogical Museum* and magnificent early Christian mosaics are to be seen in the Patriarchs’ Basilica; the Baptistery and two crypts* inside the basilica are also worth a visit.
GRADO and LAGUNA (half-day or full-day)
Walking tour through the Venetian-like part of this sea resort with thermal treatment facilities, and visit of early Christian basilicas (S. Eufemia and S. Maria delle Grazie), as well as baptistery and remains of a third basilica, up to the promenade along the seashore. Possible boat excursions in the laguna, up to the island of Barbana to visit the chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
PALMANOVA and VILLA MANIN at PASSARIANO (half-day or full-day)
Visit of the Venetian fortress, shaped as a star with its nine bastions, a national monument (only if weather conditions make it possible) or visit to local museums*, main square and church. Bus ride along the "Napoleonica" to Villa Manin at Passariano, summer residence of the last Doge of Venice. When the villa is used for some temporary exhibit, the central part may be seen only by paying an entrance ticket to the exhibit*. Free entrance for a visit to the chapel, stables and weapon museum. Possible access to the park*.
FRIULI AFTER THE 1976 EARTHQUAKE: GEMONA e VENZONE (half-day)
Excursion in the part of Friuli that was rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake. In Gemona, visit of the Gothic cathedral, which was repaired, through the main street (Via Bini) and past the historical town hall; Venzone, a National monument, was completely rebuilt as it used to be: walking tour inside the medieval town characterized by its double walls and visit of the XIVth century church. In both places, permanent exhibits show photographs illustrating the effects of the earthquakes on May 6 and September 15, 1976. In Venzone, an Earthquake Museum was recently inaugurated.
SPILIMBERGO and SAN DANIELE DEL FRIULI (half-day + 1 extra hour)
Visit of the old city of Spilimbergo, with its Gothic - Romanesque cathedral and ancient houses, as well as castle (painted palace from the outside only) followed by a visit to the famous " School of Mosaics ", with explanations regarding the ancient and modern techniques used to create mosaics (to be booked before hand). Excursion to the area where the famous raw ham is produced, with a visit of San Daniele (cathedral and church of Sant’ Antonio, with frescoes by the XVIth century painter Pellegrino da San Daniele). Possible visit of a local facility where raw ham is processed, with tasting of genuine products (to be booked and paid for).
PORDENONE and SESTO AL REGHENA (half-day + 1 extra hour or full-day)
Walking tour through the picturesque city of Pordenone built on River Noncello (Corso Vittorio Emanuele, once Contrada Maggiore, with beautiful buildings dating back to various time periods); visit of the main church (works by Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis called “il Pordenone”, by “Calderai” etc.). Possible visit of the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità with XVIth century frescoes, across the river. Interesting Museo Civico d’Arte.
Driving through the low plains of Friuli, possibility of reaching the Abbey of S. Maria in Sylvis, a Benedictine monastery at Sesto al Regent: visit of the abbey, with its Lombard remains, also famous for its medieval frescoes.
